Mike Trehy has hit his head on several hard surfaces while traveling down the long and winding road that is life. It helps explain his carefree nature, his tendency to laugh spontaneously at inappropriate moments, and his first round defeat at Field Street School's Annual Spelling Bee.
Born in Walnut Creek, California, Mike spent two healthy years in California before packing his bags and moving east to New Jersey. On setting up shop in Carney's Point / Penns Grove (the towns are separated by a thin line of sod), Mike was quick to realize that there was more in the water than just lead, as Bruce Willis hails from this same town! A 4th grade production of Godspell would solidify Mike's dream to grace the stages of gymnasiums everywhere. At the ripe age of 8, Mike found a new passion for basketball that transcended even his love for his mother's tuna casserole. The dream to become a Boston Celtic lasted until Mike's 10th trip to the Husky jean rack, when he knew it was either the courts or the Twizzlers. He made his choice with no regrets.
By 1994 it was time for a change, and Mike again packed his lime green suitcase - a remnant of a bad deal with Monty (door 3) - and headed south. This time he came to rest in Aiken, SC, a horse community with many retired persons. Aiken gave Mike a new outlook on life. Inspired by the wealthy gated communities and McMansions, Mike realized there was more to life than just the South Jersey hustle - namely golf, humidity and drawls. Standing in the trenches during the debate over whether or not the confederate flag should be allowed atop the statehouse or not, valuable lessons were learned. Through stimulating conversation with Harvard Professor Cornell West, Mike vowed to actively seek progressive social change and to consciously move away from demonizing abstractors. Life so far had afforded Mike a truly rare opportunity: to see things from both the Mason and the Dixon.
After 4 years in the south, Mike found himself battling a severe sweet tea addiction. An intervention in '99 would prove to be life-changing when Mike came home to find only ice water in the fridge. It was a night he'll never forget. He struggled to get his hands on any sweet tea he could, even tea sweetened with Equal. While no severe damage has been done yet, Mike still battles his addiction.
After graduating from Clemson University, Mike walked around Europe and the Augusta National before picking up the lime green suitcase - now more of a faded olive color - and heading to Chicago. His first winter was a rough one and he survived on instinct alone - sometimes by using two comforters, always by carrying rock salt in his pants. For three years Mike worked and performed in Chicago with such companies as Collaboraction, Dog & Pony Theatre and WNEP Theatre. He also studied improvisation at the Annoyance, iO and Second City.
Today the world is your oyster and Mike's scallop. If you're in Los Angeles, you may find him holding the door for you or running from a bee. Say hello if you see him - unless he's eating, of course - and accept his thanks for visiting this site. It's people like you that make this world what it is and who you are.
